Basics of the faith
The Layout of an Orthodox Church
Narthex, nave, sanctuary and their meaning.
Three parts
A church is divided into the narthex (place of catechumens and penitents), the nave (place of the faithful) and the sanctuary (with the holy table), separated by the iconostasis.
The sanctuary
In the sanctuary stand the holy table, on which the Eucharist is celebrated, the table of oblation for preparing the Gifts, and the high place. Clergy may enter the sanctuary, and servers with a blessing.
Conduct
It is customary to stand in church; the sign of the cross is made with the right hand; in the Russian tradition women cover their heads — a local custom that varies among the local Churches.
